Baker’s Keyboard Lounge is pleased to welcome Henry Conerway III, for his debut engagement as a bandleader at the World’s Oldest Jazz Club. This trio performance welcomes tremendously special guests: bassist Rodney Whitaker and guitarist Randy Napoleon. Conerway will explore music from his debut album "With Pride for Dignity," which debuted at number one on the iTunes charts. Each member of this trio has played Baker's Keyboard Lounge individually, and they are all excited to return to the stage for this incredible one-night-only engagement!
It's been nearly two decades since the name 'Jaspects' was illuminated on Baker's marquee and patrons lined up around the corner. Conerway, a founding member of that band comprised of 6 Morehouse Men, released four studio albums with collaborators such as Janelle Monae, PJ Morton, and Chante Cann. Since leaving Atlanta, Conerway became a leading presence on the New York jazz scene, touring with the late great Freddy Cole, Jennifer Holiday, Jazzmeia Horn, and many others. He has represented the Jazz at Lincoln Center brand from Columbus Circle and Times Square to the New York City Public Schools, and as far east as Asia. Conerway currently resides in Memphis, TN with his wife and two daughters, where he serves as artist in residence with the Memphis Drum Shop and teaches aspiring musicians with the Memphis Jazz Workshop.
Detroit is the common denominator for this trio, as it is the hometown of Distinguished Professor of Jazz Studies, Rodney Whitaker. Whitaker is the director of one of the world's most prestigious jazz studies departments at Michigan State University, where Randy Napoleon serves as the associate director. Though Napoleon hails from Brooklyn, he grew up in Ann Arbor. Both Whitaker and Napoleon have extensive discographies, touring and teaching experience that we implore you to explore at your leisure.
